My name is Salam Al-Gothani, and I am a fifth-year student at the College of Pharmacy at Zarqa University. Today, I want to talk about a painful and sensitive issue that affects many areas around the world, especially Los Angeles in the fall: wildfires. These fires are one of the most destructive environmental problems, causing severe damage to the region. The main causes of these fires are several factors, with dry and hot winds like the Santa Ana winds being one of the most important. These winds create changes in atmospheric pressure, which pushes hot, dry air from the interior toward the coast. This increases the spread of fires, making them harder to control.
Wildfires usually occur in mountainous and coastal areas, and human actions are often a key factor in starting them. These fires destroy homes, infrastructure, and wildlife. In Los Angeles, for example, wildfires have killed 25 people and forced 88,000 to evacuate their homes in California. Additionally, these fires pose a serious threat to human health. The smoke from the fires irritates the eyes and throat and can cause serious breathing problems. In some cases, authorities must evacuate entire neighborhoods to protect people.
Even though there are continuous efforts to fight these fires, including firefighters and special aircraft, the damage they cause to the environment and society remains significant. This situation causes ongoing fear among residents, who live in constant worry that these disasters may happen again at any time.
This is where we all have a role to play—by raising awareness and working together to reduce the risk of these disasters. Wildfires are not only a problem for Los Angeles and California they are a global issue. In 2019, my home country Syria also experienced a large wildfire that killed many people and caused major damage. These events show that wildfires can happen anywhere, and they affect everyone.
It is our duty to be part of the solution by spreading awareness, protecting our environment, and helping each other. We are all human beings, equal in our love for life and our desire to protect it.
In conclusion, we cannot ignore this problem that threatens our lives and our environment. To face the challenges of wildfires, we all need to be more aware and responsible. Every small action we take to prevent fires can help protect human lives, animals, and trees. Every act of solidarity and cooperation can make our world safer and more sustainable. I wish safety to all the people of California, especially Los Angeles, and pray for everyone’s protection from these disasters.
