What does a Chef and and AI scholar have in common?

Syrian, from Syria; seeking Undergraduate degree in Software Engineering and is enrolled at Zarqa University.  

I am Akram Zain al-Abidin from Daraa, Syria. I am 23 years old. I live in Irbid, Jordan.

I grew up in Saudi Arabia. MY father was an interior designer. He suffered a brain stroke and lost his job. In 2017, we moved to Jordan and I became the breadwinner of the family at an early age.

I am the eldest among my siblings and the first to reach high school.I scored 87% on my high school diploma, scientific track.

I had a passion for technology and computers since I was a child. In KSA, I used to fix computers and electronic devices with my teachers.

Family demands took me to cooking, but my heart remained in IT.

My father's illness opened my eyes to the medical applications of technology, mainly for brain-stroke patients.

I am hoping to focus my study on the neurological applications of AI.

I want to develop an app can help with the cognitive rehabilitation of victims using data analysis technology and artificial intelligence.

I also hope to be able to use artificial intelligence algorithms for other medical applications in the detection of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cancer etc..

Why Would Donors Fund You?

I have not given up on my dream. I also feel that cognitive rehab of brain stroke victims is often left to time and family members efforts which do not always help the patient recover. Studies have shown that if pursued seriously and early enough, patients can regain brain functions that help them lead reasonable independent lives.

I know it is too late to help my father, but probably early enough to many fathers out there.

How Do You Plan to Payback?

I will work as a volunteer to help other students and implement student campaigns and dedicate an hour a day teaching new students in technical programming and artificial intelligence.
